Managing 50 elementary school students with drumsticks might seem like a difficult task, but Christopher Golinkski – band teacher and head of Hillside’s “Drums of Thunder” program – never misses a beat.
Those who nominated Mr. G for this award called him an “incredible” music teacher who inspires and encourages students. They said he approaches work with a balance of seriousness and light heartedness, that he pushes students to work hard, but has an eye for fun. He offers specific and constructive feedback, individualized praise and instruction, and shows respect for children’s feelings.
One parent said Mr. G encourages his students to strive for excellence, but “without tipping into perfectionism that might make kids feel defeated.”
Another parent commended Mr. G for helping their child overcome a fear of performing in public: “Mr. G knows exactly what to say that helps kids build their inner confidence, responsibility, and drumming skill level.”
Another said he is a good role model not just in music, but in life. They wrote: “Mr. G reminds [students] that they are good citizens, representing our school, our family and the [Drums of Thunder] program.
For all these reasons, and for the lasting impact he has on students, Christopher Golinski is an inspired teacher.
