AP Biology, Anatomy & Physiology at Montclair High School are HARD classes. The subject matter is dense. The concepts are complicated. The homework can be daunting. But for many of Susan Eckert’s students, these classes were a highlight of their high school experience.
Students and parents alike praised her ability to make class fun, interesting and full of real-world connections. Those who nominated her for this award wrote about her enthusiasm, dedication and passion for teaching. They described how she sparked students’ curiosity and opened up the world of life sciences to them. She is the kind of educator who makes learning fun, even when it’s challenging. But the qualities that truly make her stand out are compassion and empathy.
One parent called Ms. Eckert a “one-of-a-kind, life-changing teacher.”
Another said: “Ms. Eckert is one of those rare teachers who can blend academic rigor and intellectual support in the same class. She communicates a ton of complex material, challenges the kids, and still provides a road map for them to be successful, and to learn from mistakes in real time.”
Another said: “[Ms. Eckert] ensures that every student feels valued and supported inside and outside of the classroom. Her kind and personal approach to teaching creates a nurturing environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and asking questions. She takes the time to get to know each student individually, providing guidance and encouragement tailored to their unique strengths and challenges.”
One student put it simply: “Ms. Eckert is the most engaging teacher I’ve had throughout my high school career.”
Susan Eckert helped countless students shine over the course of her career. Our community wishes her the best of luck in retirement and is proud to call her an inspired teacher.
